Our Story
The creamy story behind world's best dog ice cream
Or how a crazy idea turned out to a worldwide bestseller!
Our story begins in the summer of 2014 when our founder Sonja Cattani's two short-haired dachshunds' little mother was asked if she could come up with a new flavor of children's ice cream for a large ice cream manufacturer. If she came up with a truly unique flavor, the ice cream maker would trial launch it. She tinkered with a series of intricate flavors but eventually lost interest and exclaimed that there are already too many flavors for kids so why not make ice cream for dogs? The ice cream manufacturer did not light on the idea, perhaps because he was more of a parent of small children than a master/mother. But we could not let go of the brilliant idea and in the summer of 2015, the dog ice cream Hugo & Celine was launched for its own machine in selected Stockholm restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area! Since the start, production has moved from Sonja's test kitchen, to a restaurant kitchen in Stockholm, to the fitting old, historic dairy in Karlshamn. Our market has expanded from Stockholm and the surrounding area to an international sales success. And around the Nordics, dogs howl with excitement when, our court supplier, Hemglass, signature trudilute is heard in the distance. In line with the expansion, the range has also expanded from dog ice cream to both dog treats and fur care. Our esteemed figureheads, tasters and muses, Hugo & Celine, have not only been able to sample the perfect recipes and adorn our packaging and menus, but have also helped us build an empire of natural, healthy, Swedish-made dog snacks for dogs all over the world!
Swedish Production
Made in Sweden
Dog treats and dog ice cream from our own factories
Our dog ice cream is made in our own factory in the old, historic Carlshamns Dairy in Karlshamn. In 2020, production was expanded with its own line for dog treats in Landskrona. We prepare our products from natural, fine Swedish raw materials without the use of "bad" additives, such as additives for taste, color and preservation. The products are packaged, in our now award-winning, well-known packaging, and further distributed to our fantastic stores, cafes, hotels and restaurants around Sweden, the Nordic countries and the world. With pride, we brighten up everyday life as a party for dogs all over the world with Hugo & Celine's good, fun and useful range!
Sustainable Work
Work in progress
Excellent ingredients!
We work with the best of Swedish raw materials and close to the big Swedish slaughterhouses to take care of the "whole animal" together. Nothing goes to waste! This is supplemented with fine Swedish venison.
Swedish meat
-
is free from hormones and antibiotics
-
Swedish animals are prosperous and part of a sustainable process
-
Sweden has high quality and safe food that is produced with good animal care and environmental considerations
Swedish game
Free-living wild animals such as elk, deer, deer and wild boar are set to zero greenhouse gas emissions (despite the animal's rumination and methane emissions), as they would exist even without hunting. Therefore, only greenhouse gas emissions from slaughter, cutting and other things in connection with hunting and slaughter are counted. Game therefore has a lower climate impact per kilogram than, for example, beef and lamb. Support-fed game has a somewhat greater climate impact (per kilogram of meat) compared to other free-living game. However, compared to animals raised in agriculture, no additional farmland or feed is used for wild game. Hence a more sustainable choice.
