QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Everything, and then some, you want to know about our products!
However, if there’s something you can’t find – let us know.
WHO ARE HUGO AND CELINE?
Hugo is a brown mini Dachshund, who is an illegal hunter and a food-thief. Celine is his side-kick, a mini-mini black and tan Toy Dachshund, who is afraid of everything and an excellent alarm clock at around half past seven every single morning when she’s ready for her Frozen Feast spread. The dogs are the name sake of our company and they are also the faces of our brand – not to mention - they hang out every day with us in the office so we can test new products and gain immediate feedback.
WHAT IS HUGO & CELINE Ltd?
Hugo & Celine AB is a private company that started out through the introduction of ice cream for dogs in flavours that dogs really want. Next we launched dog snacks and then we launched our popular complete meals available as a frozen raw fresh food, Frozen Feast, and our carefully slow cooked dried alternative, Barking Burgers. The company is privately owned and operates as a Friends & Family company.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES US FROM OTHER COMPANIES IN THE DOG FOOD PRODUCTS INDUSTRY?
Our products are made exclusively from Swedish ingredients, and our complete meals are made from organic meats. We always “listen” to our dogstemers, that is to say dogs, when we develop new products. Our motto is high quality, packed with humour and prepared with love. We care about our products and we are extremely proud of our production processes that maintains standards found in the production of human food - and we know this is unique in our industry. Moreover, we know that we have the world's best dogstemers – sorry, I mean dogs!
I’VE FOUND LOTS OF TYPOS, WHO SHOULD I LET KNOW?
Oh wow! - this means that you’ve scoured through our text and read everything. We are busy in the dog ice cream factory and are extremely busy with making sure that the production works so that your four-legged darlings have the best snacks and food. Sadly, we do not check spleilling rerorrs and specific wordings, but please send us your comments so we make sure we correct our mistakes - we appreciate feedback!
WHY IS THE TEXT AND NAMES IN SWINGLISH?
We are a Swedish company and the ice cream is sold predominately in Sweden (now also in Scandinavia and Dubai), but we want to sniff a bit on the feeling of being continental. Additionally, There’s just something brilliant about Swinglish!
QUESTIONS ABOUT HUGO & CELINE DOG ICE CREAM
WHAT IS THE DOG ICE CREAM?
Dog Ice cream is an ice cream developed for dogs. The ice cream contains no lactose, white sugar or other nasties that can be harmful to your dog.
WHERE CAN I BUY DOG ICE CREAM?
You can buy our dog ice cream through our resellers (see list). If you live in Sweden you can buy our ice cream for dogs through Hemglass - either online delivered to your home or through their ice cream trucks that are out driving on their regular routes. You can also get home deliveries in major Swedish cities with mathem.se
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOG ICE CREAM AND REGULAR ICE CREAM?
Regular ice cream contains a lot of sugar - otherwise it freezes into a lump of ice. We replace the sugar with a touch of coconut sugar and agave syrup that each have a low glycaemic index and are not harmful to your dog.
To achieve the perfect consistency in our ice cream, we add a minimal amount of natural vegetable emulsification flour.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR PRICING AND THE CONTENTS OF THE ICE CREAM CUPS?
Each cup contains 120 ml of ice cream - but the cup is much bigger so it can also be used as a serving dish for all dogs, regardless of whether your dog is a Chihuahua or an English bulldog.
Regarding the price, dog ice cream is more expensive than human ice cream. Our values include quality, humour, delight and transparency – which is why we gladly explain our pricing structure. For example, our moose minced meat, sourced from the Swedish Hunters' Association, costs well over SEK 100/kg, and all the ingredients we use are human grade, organic as far as possible and Swedish. The cups used for the ice cream are specially designed for dogs and are non-toxic. We also have a costly freezer-chain from the factory to the customer - that of course cannot be broken. On top of that there are the newly custom built ice cream machines, personnel, rent, freezers, etc., and of course the re-seller needs something too - so you can guess that after all this we don’t make many pennies manufacturing dog ice cream - but this is the path we’ve chosen.
HOW OFTEN CAN I GIVE ICE CREAM TO MY DOG?
We recommend that you give your dog ice cream as a "treat" and not as a substitute for a meal. If your dog eats ice cream several times a day you’ll just have to take your dog for an extra walk.
Dog ice cream contains about 100 calories per 100g.
Our “Chef” dogs and figureheads, Hugo and Celine, eat ice cream at least five times a week andare not gaining weight, their fur is amazing and best of all: “what goes in comes out in the best of ways!”
DO DOGS REALLY LIKE ICE CREAM?
YES, YES and YES! We have met the most discerning dogs during our past year since starting the company, and they have all loved dog ice cream. We have more than 40.000 happy yappy doggy customers.
If your dog does not like ice cream, please contact us! We promise not to give up until we have found a flavour that your dog loves.
WHAT IS THE CONSISTENCY LIKE?
The texture is creamy and soft, but more frozen than regular ice cream. Dogs must lick their way to the bottom of the ice cream cup - a soothing ritual – which means the pleasure of eating the ice cream and the taste experience lasts much longer compared to a serving of soft ice cream. The dog should not be able to swallow the ice cream in one bite.
HOW IS THE DOG ICE CREAM SERVED?
The ice cream is served in the cup that it was portioned in following the manufacturing process, after which the cup is sealed and frozen until you serve the ice cream to your dog. The cup is non-toxic and the size of the cup is adapted to work for all breeds of dogs and snouts. After your dog has eaten the ice cream the cup can be used as a water bowl!
QUESTIONS ABOUT HUGO & CELINE COMPLETE MEALS
WHICH COMPLETE MEALS DO YOU OFFER?
Frozen Feast and Barking Burgers are our complete meals made from our original recipe.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BARKING BURGERS AND FROZEN FEAST?
Frozen Feast is our frozen fresh food, so-called raw food. Barking Burgers are made from the exact same recipe, which is then gently dried for four days to maintain the taste and to retain the healthy vitamins and minerals.
WHAT IS SO SPECIAL WITH THE INGREDIENTS IN THE COMPLETE MEALS?
We have 90% beef in our complete meals and we only buy organic meats from small local slaughterhouses where we can guarantee the best quality and where the thyroid gland is removed. This is unique to our products. The reason we want beef without thyroid is due to the high hormone levels otherwise found, which are very harmful to dogs. In addition, the rumen sourced for our products is carefully trimmed and quartered to avoid including all the weird stuff that otherwise comes with rumen (commonly slaughterhouses send the entire rumen, and unfortunately this includes a lot of other mind-blowing ghoo).
In addition, the vegetables, eggs, vitamins, calcium and omega 3, 6 & 9 used in our products are locally sourced.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTION PROCESS?
We have worked in detail to develop our production process.
First, we have extremely strict rules across the deliveries and management of raw materials; no frozen ingredients may be left in warm areas; and dry goods are stored in spaces with extra precise temperature and humidity controls.
Secondly, we complete the entire three-stage production process (meat grinding, mixing and molding) in a single day - not over three days, which is standard practice for most dog food factories. On the day of production, raw materials are exposed to oxygen for an absolute minimal amount of time, which is important especially when dealing with fresh meat.
Thirdly, we have an absolute super duper refrigeration! Our freezer is sized and adapted to produce large amounts of dog food and dog ice cream. Moreover, it is specially built for us with food production as a benchmark – and the freezing aggregates are the most environmentally friendly temperature controlled units available on the market. Our burgers are frozen-through in two hours! Normally, it can take up to four days before dog food is completely frozen in traditional “old fashioned” ammonia freezers, which is an outmoded way of freezing.
HOW HAS THE RECIPE BEEN DEVELOPED?
Veterinarian and Associate Professor Anna Hielm-Bjorkman helped us develop the ultimate recipe. She has conducted research around raw food for dogs for more than 25 years and she is independently employed by Helsinki University – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The benefits she points out, proven through her scientific reports, include that over 80% of dogs with fur, skin, intestinal and eye problems have been cured, or have significantly improved, when they switched to so-called raw fresh foods-feed without grains.
WHAT DOES THE COLLABORATION WITH ANNA HIELM-BJÖRKMAN INCLUDE?
Associate Professor Anna Hielm-Björkman is an independent researcher at the University of Helsinki. We do not pay her for her advice and expertise, however, we will donate money to research, including her independent research DOGRISK, which is directly related to developing the best suitable diet for dogs. We follow her research and base our recipes on her scientific discoveries.
MY DOG HAS NEVER EATEN FRESH FOOD, WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
First, you should be prepared that our fresh food does not smell like roses .... "Smelly to humans - gourmet to dogs";) Your dog might even get a little "scared" of the food the first time, if they haven’t eaten fresh food earlier. Some dogs can become almost primates, the wolf in them coming out. Other dogs, like our picky eater Celine, can be totally quirky and stand and bark at the freezer each morning and afternoon .... We’re confident that most dogs will be “saved” after a few days with our fresh food.
HOW DO I INTRODUCE FRESH FOOD TO MY DOG?
If your dog is very sensitive to changes in their diet, we recommend that you take a few days to make the transition; mix their old feed with our raw food feed mixing it first at 70/30, then 60/40, then 50/50, etc. until the dog has gone over to raw food 100%.
